Everyone at NYFW Is Doing This Free Styling Trick

Layering lovers, look now.

This summer was a veritable paradise for dress lovers, with high-street and designer brands alike knocking it out the park with all manner of statement-making styles. So, as autumn draws in, we have to admit that we're not quite ready to let go of our new-found frock obsession. Yes, we might be in denial, but as the weather has never stopped us dressing how we want before, we decided to do our research and discover how the fashion crowd are making their summer dresses survive the drop in temperature.

Alongside the obvious roll-neck layering technique (see Emma Thatcher's clever transformation of the It Topshop dress), there are plenty of chic ways to make the dress-layering hack work. We love how Stephanie Broek has layered a polka-dot pinafore dress over a white tee and pair of chino trousers. Olivia Palermo also didn't disappoint at New York Fashion Week with her ensemble of a white maxi dress and black trumpet-sleeved blouse. September wardrobe, sorted. Scroll down to see our favourite looks, and then shop the best layering dresses.

Style Notes: Olivia Palermo adds edge to a floaty summer frock with a trumpet-sleeved black sheer top.
Style Notes: We're in love with this ASOS leopard-printed sheer top. It layers so well under a white linen dress.
Style Notes: Reason number #508 for buying a statement white blouse? So you can instantly elevate a strappy summer dress, of course.
Style Notes: Stephanie Broek changes the look of a white tee and tailored trousers with this polka-dot pinafore dress. Genius.
Style Notes: Proof that Topshop's It dress isn't just for the summer months. It looks like it was made to be worn over a black roll-neck sweater.
